Environmental Compliance Manager

Overview

Environmental Compliance Managers ensure that organizations meet federal, state, and local environmental regulations while minimizing operational risk and environmental impact. They oversee compliance programs related to air quality, water discharge, hazardous waste, chemical storage, pollution prevention, and sustainability initiatives. This role is essential in industries such as manufacturing, energy, construction, transportation, and healthcare—where regulatory oversight is complex and constantly evolving.

Core Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain environmental compliance programs aligned with EPA, state DEP, and local regulatory requirements
• Conduct environmental audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify gaps and corrective actions
• Manage permitting processes (air, water, waste, stormwater, hazardous materials) and ensure timely renewals
• Oversee reporting obligations such as TRI, SPCC, RCRA, NPDES, and other regulatory submissions
• Coordinate environmental monitoring, sampling, and data analysis
• Lead incident investigations related to spills, releases, or non‑compliance events
• Train employees on environmental policies, emergency response, and best practices
• Collaborate with EHS, operations, legal, and engineering teams to integrate compliance into daily operations
• Interface with regulatory agencies during inspections, audits, and enforcement actions
• Support sustainability, pollution prevention, and environmental stewardship initiatives

Skills & Competencies

• Strong knowledge of EPA, OSHA, DOT, and state environmental regulations
• Ability to interpret complex regulatory language and apply it to operational settings
• Experience with environmental permitting, reporting, and recordkeeping
• Analytical skills for environmental data, sampling results, and risk assessments
• Effective communication with regulators, leadership, and frontline staff
• Project management and cross‑functional coordination
• Technical understanding of industrial processes, waste streams, and pollution controls
