Purpose:
The Health Information Manager oversees the integrity, accessibility, and security of patient health records—bridging clinical, operational, and IT functions to ensure compliance, accuracy, and strategic use of health data.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the collection, storage, and retrieval of patient health information across electronic and paper systems
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and other federal/state regulations governing health data
- Implement and maintain Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and health information technologies
- Oversee medical coding and classification systems for billing, reimbursement, and analytics
- Conduct audits to ensure data accuracy, completeness, and regulatory alignment
- Collaborate with clinical, administrative, and IT teams to optimize data workflows
- Train staff on documentation standards, privacy protocols, and system usage
- Analyze health data to support quality improvement, reporting, and research initiatives
Ideal Background:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Health Information Management, Health Informatics, or related field
- Certifications: RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), or CHPS
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, SNOMED, and HL7 standards
- Experience with EHR platforms (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech) and data governance frameworks
