🧭 Overview
Transportation Safety Officers (TSOs) are responsible for ensuring the safe operation of vehicles, transit systems, and freight movement across road, rail, air, and sea. They develop and enforce safety protocols, conduct inspections, and train personnel to minimize accidents and maintain compliance with federal and state regulations. TSOs play a vital role in protecting passengers, drivers, cargo, and the public by fostering a strong safety culture and coordinating emergency response efforts.
This role requires a blend of regulatory knowledge, investigative skill, and hands-on experience with fleet operations and driver behavior.
🛠️ Responsibilities
- Develop and implement transportation safety policies and procedures
- Conduct regular audits, inspections, and ride-alongs to assess driver performance
- Monitor fleet maintenance schedules and vehicle safety conditions
- Investigate accidents and recommend corrective actions
- Coordinate emergency response plans and crisis management protocols
- Deliver safety training to drivers, dispatchers, and support staff
- Ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, and local transit regulations
- Serve on accident review boards and safety committees
- Promote safety awareness through literature, events, and internal campaigns
- Maintain records of certifications, physical exams, and driver qualifications
🎓 Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in transportation, safety management, or related field
- Certifications: CET, CSP, CDSP, OSHA 30-Hour, First Aid/CPR
- Strong knowledge of vehicle operation, fleet safety, and regulatory compliance
- Excellent communication and training skills
- Ability to analyze incidents and implement proactive safety measures
