ADPA® – Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor is a specialized designation offered by the College for Financial Planning® – A Kaplan Company. It is the only credential of its kind focused on the unique financial planning needs of unmarried couples, including domestic partners, LGBTQ+ households, and cohabiting individuals.

The ADPA® program equips financial professionals to navigate the legal and financial disparities between domestic partnerships and legally recognized marriages. Topics include wealth transfers, federal and state taxation, retirement benefits, estate planning, and end-of-life considerations. The designation is especially relevant for advisors serving clients affected by gaps in legal protections or benefit eligibility.

📚 Requirements

  • Online self-study program with OnDemand video lectures, reading assignments, and quizzes
  • Closed-book final exam; must be completed within 120 days of enrollment
  • Estimated study time: 100–120 hours
  • No formal prerequisites; suitable for financial advisors, attorneys, and tax professionals
  • Continuing education: 16 hours every two years
