AFE – Accredited Financial Examiner is a foundational designation offered by the Society of Financial Examiners (SOFE). It is designed for professionals conducting financial examinations of insurance companies and other regulated entities. The AFE credential validates expertise in insurance accounting, regulatory compliance, and solvency oversight, and is widely recognized by state insurance departments and financial regulatory agencies.
AFE designees are trained to assess the financial condition of insurers through structured examinations, applying statutory accounting principles and industry standards. The designation also serves as a prerequisite for SOFE’s advanced credential, the Certified Financial Examiner (CFE).
📚 Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; or equivalent coursework in accounting, business law, and economics
- Two years of insurance department experience related to financial solvency regulation within the last three years
- Employment with a state insurance department or a contractor directly serving one
- Successful completion of four SOFE-administered exams:
- AFE1 – Life and Health Insurance Fundamentals
- AFE2 – Property and Liability Insurance Fundamentals
- AFE3 – Life and Health Insurance Accounting
- AFE4 – Property and Liability Insurance Accounting
- Membership in SOFE as a General Member in good standing
- Formal application and approval by SOFE’s Membership and Executive Committees
