Lab Safety Officers (LSOs) serve as the guardians of safe scientific inquiry, ensuring that laboratory environments meet rigorous health, safety, and regulatory standards. They oversee chemical hygiene, hazardous waste protocols, and emergency preparedness across research and clinical labs. LSOs act as both educators and enforcers—training personnel, conducting audits, and liaising with regulatory bodies to uphold compliance.

This role blends technical expertise with proactive risk management, requiring a deep understanding of laboratory operations, safety regulations, and environmental health standards.

 

🛠️ Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine lab inspections and safety audits
  • Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical inventories
  • Develop and enforce chemical hygiene plans and lab safety protocols
  • Coordinate safety training sessions for lab personnel and students
  • Monitor use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Serve as liaison to Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and regulatory agencies
  • Investigate lab incidents and recommend corrective actions
  • Ensure proper functioning of safety equipment (eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, fume hoods)
  • Chair or participate in institutional safety committees
  • Prepare reports and documentation for compliance and accreditation

 

🎓 Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related field
  • Certifications: SLS (ASCP), Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), OSHA Lab Safety Training
  • Familiarity with EPA, OSHA, NFPA, and ANSI standards
  • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments
